Bankruptcy & Restructuring: 1H 2013 Review

The number of U.S. businesses filing Chapter 11 petitions with $1 million or more in debt fell 17 percent in the first half of 2013 compared to the same period of 2012. California’s central district was the most active venue and many of the largest cases were taken on by Delaware’s court. While Detroit’s July 18 Chapter 9 petition is at the forefront of the public’s attention, only one U.S. municipality sought court protection between January and June, down from five a year ago. Fewer foreign companies looked to protect their assets in the U.S. from creditors with a Chapter 15 petition and most of those were from Canada.
